What Is TPO Roofing?
Introduced in the 1990s, TPO roofing is a single-ply roofing system that consists of a thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) membrane. Typically, it’s composed of three layers:
- A polymer base
- A polyester-reinforced fabric center
- A thermoplastic polyolefin compounded top layer
This means it has the qualities of PVC, including hot-air weldable seams and enhanced energy efficiency, but it also has solid UV resistance and resists dirt accumulation, punctures and tears caused by impacts. These are ideal properties in areas where hail is common. TPO roofing is particularly suited for larger buildings where thermal expansion and contraction can cause significant stress on roofs since it easily expands and contracts with the building.
Because TPO is white, it reflects most of the heat it encounters, so it doesn’t absorb radiation and heat up your property. This can help lower air conditioning bills, even during hot summers, reducing overall expense.
When Do Alternatives Need To Be Considered?
TPO roofing is ideal for many situations, but you will need to consider an alternative if there is significant thermal loading. Typically, if an area regularly experiences temperatures of more than 160 degrees Fahrenheit, TPO roofing may not be suitable as a long-term roofing solution.
In addition, if the area is regularly exposed to grease, such as from a kitchen exhaust fan, TPO may degrade as a result, depending on the precise combination of gases exhausted.
